Educational Support

The KAP staff works closely with the schools and consultants to write and implement an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) designed to meet the participants’ academic, communication, sensory, and social/behavioral needs. Educational support is addressed through tutoring in an after school setting at the CEC facility. The tutoring skills support those taught within the schools, and include literacy, math, and communication.

Social Skills

A critical component for the elementary students is group interactions. For this reason Group is held everyday to develop the personal skills which are so important for individuals diagnosed with ASD. The curriculum focuses on tasks, such as getting along with others, problem solving, friendship skills, taking turns, etc. These sessions are lead by a graduate assistant(s) from the Exceptional Education program, with the assistance of other staff members. Also, a collaboration model is used with the Communication Disorders Clinic staff during these group sessions.

Leisure/Recreation

A number of recreational activities are held throughout the semester such as VSA art, swimming and family game nights. These socials are scheduled beyond the regular tutorial sessions. Parents can participate with their son/daughter and meet the other parents involved in KAP.
